TIMING BELTS AND CHAINS

What is a timing belts and timing chain?

Timing belts, timing chains, and wet belts are all essential components in an engine’s valve timing system. They ensure that the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft rotate in sync so that the intake and exhaust valves open and close at the right moments.

Timing Belts

Timing belts are rubber or reinforced rubber belts with teeth (or grooves) that mesh with gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. They synchronize the timing of the engine's valves with the rotation of the crankshaft.

Wet Belts:

Wet belts are a less common but emerging technology. They are timing belts similar to traditional ones but are designed to be lubricated with oil (hence "wet"). This lubrication reduces friction and wear.

Timing chains are made of metal and use a system of gears and sprockets to connect the crankshaft to the camshaft. The chain is much more durable than a timing belt and can last the lifetime of the engine (if properly maintained).
